    Medical and Vocational Expert Witnesses

When you attend your hearing for Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) there might be a Medical Expert Witness and/or a Vocational Expert Witness in attendance. These witnesses come from a panel of experts selected by Social Security. The judge who presides over the hearing will decide if he wants a medical and/or vocational expert at the hearing. When you receive your hearing notice, it will tell you if a medical and/or vocational expert will be at your hearing.

    Medical Expert Witness

The medical expert witness is a doctor that has been contracted by the Social Security Administration. The medical expert will review all the medical records in your file and give his/her opinion if you meet or equal one of the listed impairments. The judge might ask the medical expert for his/her opinion of your functional limitations from all your conditions. Medical experts tend to have very strong opinions. You will need an experienced lawyer to cross examine the medical expert.

    Vocational Expert Witness

Just like the medical expert, the vocational expert is contracted by the Social Security Administration. The vocational expert will review your file and give his/her opinion regarding jobs that you might be able to perform given your disability, education, age, and work experience. You will need an experienced lawyer who can point out why you would not be able to do the jobs that are suggested by the vocational expert.

It is always a good idea to have qualified representation at your disability hearing. If your hearing notice states that a medical or vocational expert witness will be at your hearing then you really want to make sure that you have a good lawyer or representative that is experienced with social security disability hearings.
