Does California have a time limit on Social Security disability benefits?

Once you reach retirement age, your disability benefits will automatically convert to retirement benefits and the amount will stay the same.

Once you qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits you can receive those benefits for the rest of your life; however, once you reach retirement age, your disability benefits will automatically convert to retirement benefits and the amount will stay the same.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) does perform Continuing Disability Reviews (CDR) on your disability case. These reviews are usually done every one, three or seven years. The frequency of your CDR depends on the severity of your disability and the expectation of improvement. During this review, if the SSA finds proof from your medical records that you no longer have a disability, your benefits might be terminated.

The SSA very rarely finds proof during a CDR of improvement that results in the termination of benefits. The majority of people who are approved for disability benefits will receive those benefits until retirement age at which time those benefits convert into retirement benefits.
