    Video TeleConferencing for Disability Hearings

Part of the application process for disability benefits from Social Security includes a hearing to determine if you qualify. However, attending a hearing in person may be difficult because of the travel involved. The good news is that Jorgensen Law of San Diego offers video teleconferencing that has been certified as per the RVP code.

    What is Video TeleConferencing (VTC)?

This is a special room that has been equipped with a TV, camera, speaker, and microphone which allows contact with an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) over a secure encrypted connection for social security disability hearings.
The hearing itself is conducted via video conference where you sit comfortably inside the room while the ALJ is at another location but can be seen on the television screen. During the hearing, the judge will oversee your case and determine whether you qualify for disability benefits for Social Security based on what you have provided.
Video TeleConferencingA VTC differs from a traditional disability hearing because the ALJ is not present in the same room as you. However, the judge can still see and hear you, allowing for effective communication in a secure environment. The ability of the judge to see you will help determine your qualifications because your behavior and demeanor will be on display as well. You may discover that the judge has zoomed the camera in on you to see your reaction to questions that are posted.
The VTC can only be conducted at certain locations which include Jorgensen Law of San Diego. We offer this special service to those who apply for disability benefits from Social Security and need to be present when the hearing takes place. Our VTC area meets all requirements and is here to serve you when needed.

    Video TeleConferencing Pros & Cons

Social Security Admin Secure Video TeleConferenceThere are numerous advantages to attending a VTC instead of having to set up a traditional disability hearing with the ALJ.
Convenience: The video teleconference offers you the ability to drive shorter distances and enjoy greater convenience in using our room as opposed to setting up a traditional disability hearing. This means that you sit in comfort while the proceedings occur without having the inconvenience of driving further distances to attend the hearing in person.
Faster Hearing Date: It is generally easier for the ALJ to set up a video conference as opposed to a traditional hearing, which means that you may be able to get a faster date for your disability hearing. This can be advantageous in several ways, but in essence to having a faster hearing date means getting your disability benefits sooner if you qualify.
There are no real disadvantages to a VTC in terms of being present for your disability hearing. You will be able to see and hear the ALJ, understand the hearing as it occurs, and be judged by the same merits as if you were in the same room. This means that your first choice should be to set up a video conference instead of a traditional hearing since it is faster and more convenient.

    Should You Have Representation?

BusinessThis is a question that many who are trying to qualify for Social Security disability benefits ask before attending the hearing. The answer is that proper legal representation provides you with several advantages that will help secure your disability benefits. Just because the hearing is conducted via video teleconference does not lessen the need to have a skilled, experienced attorney by your side.
Having proper representation does not necessarily elevate your chances of getting disability benefits in the traditional sense, apart from being properly organized and having all documents in place. However, a good lawyer by your side may prevent a misunderstanding from occurring that sets back your efforts at the hearing. Remember that the ALJ is judging not only the information you have presented but your demeanor and conduct at the hearing.
One misstatement, one outburst, or even a small misunderstanding may have a powerful effect on the ALJ, so having an attorney by your side protecting your rights and advising you on your statements, conduct, and demeanor can make all the difference.
