When you apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) you must be honest and truthful about the information you provide. The Social Security Administration (SSA) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) handles reports of fraud, waste, and abuse in Social Security cases.
To report fraud, you can visit the OIG section of the SSA website. (https://www.ssa.gov/oig). Or you can call the Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271. You can choose to remain anonymous; however, doing so will make it harder for the SSA to conduct a complete investigation.
Some Examples of FRAUD are:
- Does not report work activity while receiving SSDI or SSI benefits
- Is living out of the country and is still receiving SSI benefits
- Hides a marriage or assets from the Social Security Administration while receiving SSI payments.
- Does not report Worker Compensation benefits to SSA while receiving SSDI or SSI benefits.
There are many more examples of fraud, waste, and abuse that the OIG investigates.
